French Doors vs Sliding Doors: Which Is Right for Your Colorado Home?

It is one of the most common questions we hear from Colorado Springs homeowners: should I go with French doors or sliding doors for my patio opening?

Both are excellent choices. Both connect your indoor living space to the outdoors. Both let in beautiful natural light and frame your Colorado views. But they have different strengths, and the right choice depends on your home, your lifestyle, and your priorities.

After installing hundreds of both styles across the Front Range, here is my honest comparison.

How They Operate

The fundamental difference is simple.

French doors swing open on hinges, either inward or outward. Most Colorado installations use outswing doors because they seal better against wind and do not take up interior floor space. You can open one panel or both for a wide, dramatic opening.

Sliding doors glide horizontally on a track. One panel typically stays fixed while the other slides. Some premium models offer both panels as operable, and multi-slide configurations can stack several panels to one side.

This difference in operation affects everything else, from energy performance to space requirements to the overall feel of your home.

Space Requirements

This is often the deciding factor.

French doors need clearance to swing. An outswing French door needs clear patio or deck space in front of it. An inswing door needs clear floor space inside the room. If you have furniture, planters, or a narrow patio near the opening, swing clearance can be a real limitation.

Sliding doors need zero swing clearance. They operate within their own footprint, which makes them ideal for tight spaces, small decks, or rooms where furniture sits close to the door.

Winner for small spaces: Sliding doors, without question.

Winner for wide-open layouts: French doors deliver a more dramatic, grand opening when space is not an issue.

Energy Efficiency at Altitude

At 6,300 feet in Colorado Springs, energy performance matters more than in most parts of the country. Our winters are cold, our summers bring intense sun, and our wind can be relentless.

French doors have a natural advantage here. When a hinged door closes, it compresses against the weatherstripping, creating a tight seal. Quality French doors with multi-point locking systems pull the door firmly into the frame at multiple contact points.

Sliding doors rely on brush or compression weatherstripping along the track and meeting rail. Modern sliders have improved dramatically, and today’s best models seal very well. But physics gives a slight edge to the compression seal of a hinged door.

Both styles should include:

  • Low-E coated glass to control heat transfer and block UV
  • Argon or krypton gas fill between panes
  • Altitude-rated seals designed for Colorado’s elevation
  • Insulated frames (avoid bare aluminum)

When properly specified and installed, both styles deliver excellent energy performance in our climate.

Wind Resistance

Colorado wind is no joke. We regularly see sustained winds of 30 to 50 mph along the Front Range, with gusts that exceed 80 mph during spring storms.

Outswing French doors perform well in wind because the pressure pushes the door into the frame, tightening the seal. This is one reason we recommend outswing over inswing for most Colorado installations.

Inswing French doors can be pushed open by strong gusts if the latch is not fully engaged. We generally discourage inswing on west-facing or south-facing openings that catch the most wind.

Sliding doors are largely unaffected by wind when closed because there is no swing surface for wind to catch. The track system holds the panels in place regardless of wind direction.

Aesthetics and Home Style

This is where personal preference really comes into play.

French doors say “classic, elegant, welcoming.” They suit craftsman homes, traditional architecture, and any home where you want a sense of formality and warmth. When both panels swing open, the effect is genuinely impressive.

Sliding doors say “modern, clean, efficient.” They complement contemporary builds, ranch homes, and mid-century architecture. The slim frames and wide glass panels put the focus on the view, not the door.

Many Colorado Springs neighborhoods feature a mix of architectural styles. In the Old North End, French doors often feel like the natural choice. In newer communities like Briargate or Cordera, sliding doors match the modern aesthetic perfectly.

Security Considerations

Both door styles are secure when equipped with quality hardware.

French doors use multi-point locking systems that engage at the top, bottom, and middle of the door. This distributes force across the entire frame, making them very difficult to force open.

Sliding doors use a combination of latch locks, foot locks, and security bars. Premium models include multi-point locks that rival the security of French doors.

The key for both styles is the quality of the hardware. Bargain-priced doors with basic latches are less secure regardless of the style. Invest in quality, and security is a non-issue for either option.

Maintenance Compared

French doors require periodic hinge lubrication, threshold adjustment, and weatherstripping inspection. The hinges bear the full weight of the door panels, so they can sag over time if not properly maintained. Quality doors with ball-bearing hinges minimize this issue.

Sliding doors need track cleaning (Colorado dust and dirt accumulate in tracks), roller inspection, and occasional weatherstrip replacement. The rollers are the most likely component to wear out first, typically after 15 to 20 years of daily use.

Neither style is high-maintenance, but French doors do have a few more moving parts to keep an eye on.

Making Your Decision

Here is a quick summary to help you choose.

Choose French doors if you have ample swing clearance, you prefer a traditional or elegant aesthetic, you want the widest possible unobstructed opening, or wind resistance is a top priority (outswing).

Choose sliding doors if you have limited space on either side of the opening, you prefer a modern or contemporary look, you want minimal maintenance, or you need the most practical everyday operation.

Consider both if you are torn. Many homeowners use French doors on their primary patio entrance and sliding doors on secondary openings like a master bedroom or basement walkout.

help Frequently Asked Questions

Are French doors more expensive than sliding doors? expand_more
Generally yes. French doors typically cost more than sliding doors of the same size due to the additional hardware, hinges, and more complex installation. The price difference varies by material and brand, so we recommend getting a custom quote for your specific project.
Which is more energy efficient, French doors or sliding doors? expand_more
French doors typically seal slightly tighter because the door compresses against weatherstripping when closed. However, modern sliding doors with multi-point locks have narrowed this gap significantly. Both perform well in Colorado's climate when properly installed with Low-E glass and altitude-rated seals.
Can I replace my sliding door with French doors? expand_more
Yes, this is a very common upgrade. The rough opening usually requires minor adjustments, but the conversion is straightforward for an experienced installer. Dream Windows handles these conversions regularly across Colorado Springs.
Do French doors need more maintenance than sliding doors? expand_more
French doors have more moving parts, including hinges, handles, and multi-point locking systems. They benefit from periodic hinge lubrication and adjustment. Sliding doors need track cleaning and occasional roller replacement. Neither requires excessive maintenance when quality products are installed.
